"El Scorcho" Weezer
I first heard this song when I was 14 years old when my friend Steve made me a tape of Weezer's Pinkerton album. I have a couple of memories tied to this one, the first being from that time in my life. Imagine me wearing clothes that are either slightly too big or slightly too small (never exactly my size), long-ish hair combed over, pink Chuck Taylor's, walking around Poston Junior High School. This song was my anthem. As a teenager, I loved the idea of writing a quirky yet somehow romantic tune like "El Scorcho". And as silly as it sounds, I was always searching for a muse to serve as inspiration for that. I doubt most young men spend their teenage years like this, but to me it was perfectly normal. Mind you, I don't say that meaning I dated girls as a teenager (whatever that looks like). No, I was what you'd call a serial crusher. And Weezer fueled this heavily.
Then fast forward over a decade later. I will also always associate this song with the many times I found myself in a crowd of great friends passionately singing every word together. Usually with both me and my friend Myke strumming along. It's as if that silly teenager grew older just to find other silly, grown teenagers who shared a common love for all things "Scorcho".
