Soundtrack To A Memory
There's an article I read once by David Byrne where he describes the negative changes to the music industry in recent years. Although not his main point, what I valued most was a statement he made about the relationship music has with each of us.
"Music was an experience, intimately married to your life.
You could pay to hear music, but after you did, it was over, gone — a memory."
Building off of this idea, I've pondered the inseparable link shared by the experiences of my life and the music I've associated with those experiences. That connection may come from a song capturing the same story, emotion, or mood as a memory. Or it can be as plain as the song being played when that memory was created. Whatever the reason, music has helped me hold on to the people and places that have made me who I am.
I have a terrible memory. I forget things all the time, and it genuinely bothers me. And I don't want to lose myself to time. But keeping a journal wouldn't do enough for me. When my daughter wants to understand the things I've seen and how I felt in the moments that defined me, I'll turn on a song.
This blog is dedicated to that relationship with music.
Each post will be my reflection on a song and the memory or memories tied to that song. Remembering songs and the memories forever bound to them.
